In June we took a trip to Gettysburg, PA to relive a part of American history. Twelve scouts and four adults hiked along the battlefield lines up to Little Round Top and then over to the field where Pickett’s charge occurred. The Troop spent some time in the Battlefield Museum and viewed the Cyclorama mural on display inside the museum. The Troop camped at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, PA and enjoyed a tour of their fire station and the up-fitting assembly line, where military vehicles are equipped with extra armor plating for protection from explosions.
We spent a week at summer camp in July at the Shenandoah Area Council’s Camp Rock Enon near Winchester, VA. Fifteen scouts worked on various merit badges throughout the week while also enjoying water activities, rifle shooting and hiking in the mountains. Troop 183 earned a ribbon for our flag pole by scoring five hundred points for daily camp inspections and won the best gateway award.
In August the Troop hosted several Webelos Cub Scouts from Pack 183 on a camping trip at Lake Anna. The morning was spent out on the lake, tubing, swimming and, for some, attempting to wakeboard. The rain did not dampen the spirits of the scouts, as the sun came back out. The storm overnight did cause some of the scouts to take cover in the house, due to leaking tents.
September will find our Troop traveling to Virginia Beach for the NAS Oceana Air Show on September 23-25th. This event is held annually by the Naval Air Station Oceana providing a very exciting aerial show as well as planes and helicopters on display for up close viewing. The show concludes with the famous Blue Angels demonstrating their amazing flying skills.
We invite any boys, ages 11-17, to visit our Troop meetings on Monday evenings at 6:30 pm in the church basement. Anyone interested in joining may contact me at 540-223-0757 for more information.
