Project: You Are Special! Nobel Laureate and activist, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had a dream. Psychologist, author, and teacher, Dr. H. Stephen Glenn, had a dream, too. On January 13, 2007, those dreams came together in a powerful way. First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, Georgia hosted its annual Urban Ministries Conference to commemorate King's vision and offer concrete ministry to some of the homeless folks who are their nearest neighbors. This year the conference included a new and challenging program called Developing Capable People. Based on Glenn's internationally known work, and led by Dr. Sue Boardman of ChangeWorksAtlanta, the workshop for homeless parents was designed to help parents build positive ways of relating with their children, even in the midst of the stressful circumstances in which they live. At the same time, the children, led by volunteers from the church and community, were engaged in experiences of Glenn's three crucial perceptions for effective living: I am capable; I am significant; I have influence in my life. Boardman, challenged by the prospect of building those perceptions in some of our nation's most at-risk kids, envisioned Project: You Are Special! to help. Volunteers in Georgia, Florida, and Virginia worked over several months to make a simple quilt for each child. Participants prayed for the kids as they cut and sewed. Then, the quilts were tied, each knot another prayer, in worship services. Susan Rigdon coordinated the volunteers in Virginia and came to deliver quilts to Atlanta and do music with the kids on the 13th. In all, 111 quilts, most with the children's names on them, left the church clutched by smiling children. Their moms smiled, too. And many dreams came just a bit closer that day.
